Poor Mr. Madoff

The alleged fraud destroyed the investments of thousands of individuals, public pensions, charitable foundations and university endowments. Some individual victims said they hope a possible guilty plea won't stand in the way of a severe punishment for Mr. Madoff.

If he had only asked the government for a loan and submitted a restructuring plan, he might have been able to ride out this recession.
